Revere

Robert B. Parker's Wonderland

Revere is where the planned development’s land assembly meets the remains of Wonderland’s racetrack, and where a late-night drive brings Spenser and Henry Cimoli to the site as they search for Zebulon Sixkill. The city’s beachside condos and the track’s derelict grounds place redevelopment and immediate personal danger side by side.

Setting and Approach

After midnight, Spenser and Henry drive through the Callahan Tunnel toward Route 1A and reach Revere in fifteen minutes. Across the highway, condominiums extend north along Revere Beach, their rooftop red lights visible against the night; the ocean is close enough to smell. The approach sets a lived-in residential coastline beside the cleared, industrial-looking landscape of the old racetrack.

Land and Redevelopment

Lewis Blanchard describes the property campaign as a five-year effort to assemble land through anonymous buyers. The last condominium was the obstacle: residents still lived there, and Blanchard characterized them as difficult, while the other parcels—including the dog track—were empty. His account places Revere’s racetrack within a broader acquisition strategy in which vacant land could be gathered more readily than an occupied home.

Wonderland and the Search

At Wonderland, the emptied parking lot exposes buckling asphalt and potholes. Remnants of the old amusement park stand near the grandstand, whose entrance remains marked by crime-scene tape; a new chain-link fence runs across the racetrack frontage. Near several ragged construction trailers, Spenser spots Zebulon Sixkill’s Mustang. The familiar car transforms the neglected development site into the immediate focus of the search, while the drive’s coastal setting gives way to the uncertainty of what they will find there.
